gonzos beatnik jazz

This is a compilation of beatnik poetry and jazz that i put together while i had
access to some rare vinyl, cassettes and cd's at the radio station i was working at in Portland Maine......
Jack had always compared his writing to the fluid and improvisational meter of jazz greats like Chalie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Every song is started off with a piece of Beat poetry.
I have been a fan of Jack Kerouac and beatnik writing and its musical counterpart, jazz since my late teens. and finally w the availability of a radio station and an analog cd burner i got the chance to put together a nice compilation of writers such as  Kerouac, Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg,Lawrence Ferlinghetti, H.S.Thompson, and even a bit from Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter reading from Jack Kerouac's 'Visions of Cody' about Neal Cassidy fused with some of my favorite jazz composers such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Smith, Jaco Pastorius and more!   This is Beat writers/jazz 101 folks.... so if you are slightly into these 2 genres of art, then you will NOT be dissapointed

NEWSPAPER TAXIS...a bizzare ride to the dark side

some good listening of the points of hallucinogenic structure to abstract thought  from psychological heroes, horrors, and dainty acid dreams that fade in and out of the omitted and submitted unconsciousness of our fragile 'egg shelled mind'

these are interviews, sound clips and radio fun from the late 1960's....from chemists, and high priests and doctors that have influenced the world around regardless of your happened. good or bad trip, expect or disrespect what you is fun to listen to this radio candy from before i was born or even thought of...

Newspaper Taxis: A Bizarre Ride To The Dark Sidern    This is an interesting audio documentary that covers counter-culture topics such as LSD, Marijuana, Magic Mushrooms, Mescaline and the opening of consciousness and contains background information and archive interviews with cult figures such as Philip K. Dick, Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Kenneth Anger, G. Gordon Liddy and more.rnrnNewspaper Taxis is another in the series of spoken word recordings released by Chrome Dreams.

This time around, the spotlight is on the "chemical crusaders, the drugs they used and the cult authors whose work has been influenced by them" like Ken Kesey, Aldous Huxley, and J.G. BallardrnrnTaking its name from the Beatles\' Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Newspaper Taxis ruins yet another good chance to archive some very important recordings with a lame voiceover and cheesey soundtrack.
The narrator this time even takes on a psychedelic tone of voice, which makes for even more laughable listening. Since the source material is a little more interesting coming from a druggy tip, there is a lot of great material buried here that would be cool to sample for a radio show, but good luck digging past the intrusive narration.
They don\'t seem to understand that\'s what liner notes are for.
An interesting side note about the cd title: sometime in the late 80s, 100 London taxis were indeed turned into "newspaper taxis" with entire newspapers published in vinyl on the sides and tops of the cabs.rnrnAn abundance of interviews means that it\'s also great for sampling, but please clear all rights with the publisher before commercially releasing anything that contains copyright material owned by others.

Although this man is not well known to the average listener...Mississippi John Hurt is HIGHLY regarded as an innovator of what many musicians consider 'old standards' or a flatpicking, country blues style that has changed the world of music forever....influencing such musicians as Doc Watson, John Hammond, Bonnie Raitt and Jorma Kaukonen (hot tuna) to name a few...a mix of moutain blues, old timey and country..a underrated legend of the blues not well known and recorded till the last decade of his life.... so have a listen and appreciate

david grisman and del McCoury Bluegrass Experience 9/22/89

This is a tribute tO Del McCoury set at this years (2010) Greyfox Bluegrass Fest in OAK HILL NY (just outside of Albany) which he and the boys were joined by David 'dawg' Grisman on a few of the tunes..
I had so much fun at this fest with the Provencetown Mass boys...we picked more music than we seen..prolly 6 hours a day (then midnight til?????) my fingers are still green from the strings!!!
I always loved this bootleg, and the sound quality is superb.(could use a little more bass)......FINGER PICKIN GOOD!!!....

GALACTIC 10/22/97 State College PA

 I first discovered Galactic when i was in New Orleans for jazz fest around 1997...matter of fact, it was the same tour..., it is legal to walk around w alcohol as long as its in a plastic when he first heard them we didnt have the 15 bucks a piece (worth it yea, but we couldnt afford it, driving from jersey and trying to stay 2 weeks of jazz fest, so we bought 2 six packs of Abita Turbo Dog (new orleans bock beer..really good stuff!) and hung out and rocked out on the streets...i kept peeking in and remember seeing the drummer laughing cause we were jammin to their music in the streets!! this was when they were a fairly small band...except they were obviously well known in their homtown of Nawliins'!!!!! Later i had the pleasure of hanging w Houseman up in Portland ME and doing a radio promo w him for our station in ME while scrambling to find him some heady nugs before the show for him.... Since then Theyrl DeClouet(pictured on the left) has had some throat he's no longer in the band. I have always been a big advocate of his, but ive actually heard people say they werent into his extremely soulful vocals...WHATEVER!! ANYWAY...This goes out to Houseman....the band hasnt been the same since he left..and thats all i have to say about this...and State College was a small venue...cause my boy Rich ran a Hookah Lounge/headshop a few blocks away called Tall Shiva....anybody who knows me, knows that im not into audience recordings, but this is an exception because its a MATRIX (i.e a SBD mixed w an audience mic and it more sbd than audience!!)
the sound is good, the performance is great..and as Houseman says...stay funky!

PINK FLOYD - behind the wall video documentary

Pink Floyd - Behind the Wall video documentary.

sorry people, this is in vcd (video cd)  or svcd (super video cd) which plays on computers,
and can be converted to dvd w any decent dvd converting software.
i couldnt...well didnt bother to convert it to an .avi file (the more popular video file after .mpg)
so im keeping it in vcd format...and hopefully someone will transfer it to avi
so more people can watch it on newer dvd players and such...many of the older dvd
players support .mpg/vcd  so check your dvd player (look for an .mpg sticker in the front) may play it.
its still a great documentary about the album and movie THE WALL.
if you like pink floyd, this is well worth the free download!!!

 This man is one sick pianist and his band is always on point! I was on this Furthur Fest tour w The Dead, Bruce Hornsby and Hot Tuna...what a fun tour this was!!

Biography: Bruce Hornsby

Since the release of his first album in April 1986, Bruce Hornsby has created a musical life that has expanded far and wide to include a broad stylistic range of activity.
Hornsby, a thirteen-time Grammy nominee, has won three Grammys – in 1987 with the Range for “Best New Artist” for their debut album The Way It Is; in 1989 for “Best Bluegrass Recording” for his version of his hit “The Valley Road” which appeared on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume II; and with Branford Marsalis in 1993 for “Best Pop Instrumental Performance” for their song for the Barcelona Olympics, “Barcelona Mona.”  Bruce’s latest nominations were in 2004 for “Song F”, from his Columbia album Halcyon Days, and in 2006 for “Song H” from his box set Intersections.

Backstage Jerry Garcia Interview10/77 Portland OR

This is a great interview backstage of a Portland Oregon show in oct.1977... by the sound of it, 2 people with cocaine and a microphone got Jerry to do an interview and managed to get themselves passes for the show that night because of it!! you can here it must have been 420 as well since theres a bit of coughing going on between sentences and inhalations! funny funny stuff!
anyway, its a must here/have for any Dead head out there...

Bob Marley and the Wailers 10/31/73 KSAN Studios , Sausalito, CA,

This is in memory of Bob Marley who died today
While flying home from Germany to Jamaica, accepting that he was going to die, Marley's vital functions worsened. After landing in Miami, he was taken to hospital for immediate medical attention. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami on the morning of May 11, 1981, at the age of 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death. His final words to his son Ziggy were "Money can't buy life."

Doc and Merle Watson 3/1/73 Lisner Auditorium Washington D.C.

 As a celebration of me going to Merlefest this weekend, i offer up this great show of Doc and his son Merle from 1973

Doc Watson  is 87 years old this year! Arthel "Doc" Watson grew up listening and playing traditional folk and bluegrass music on the family farm in North Carolina. Blind since infancy, Doc Watson began playing guitar for money in the 1950s, starting out playing the electric guitar in a small local band. With the folk music revival of the 1960s, Doc moved to acoustic guitar (and harmonica) and recorded original and traditional tunes, quickly earning a reputation as one of the best flat-pickers in the business.

Now, a little history about Merlefest.........
In 1985 Docs son, Merle Watson died tragically in a tractor accident on the night of October 23rd and in
1988 The first Merlefest is held in remembrance of Merle Watson and has been being held in North Carolina ever since.

then 10 years later i transferred it to CDR,
i dont think i used any NR or any EQ, but i cant remember,
i transferred the tape to cd 10 years ago....its been that long since i listened to it.
I do know that this is a rare unreleased vinyl recording so Hendrix fans enjoy!

here are a few scans to convinve you of the bogus tracks on Free Spirit.
Lonnie Youngblood was the featured performer playing sax and doing the main vox. The guitar player`s name is mentioned in scan #1..this book was published back in the early 90`s by author Ceasar Glebbeck who has  been the instrumental force behind the Jimi Hendrix fanzine , "UniVibes" for years,,he is a Jimi Hendrix expert, I have also antoher book by a very famous bootleg collector  called "Belmo" [google his beatles book] that offers up basically the same info about these bogus tracks.
Not trying to be cut or an asshole just  simply am a long time fan of Jimi`s and I like to see the truth  about his work as there is a lot of misinformation out there.

The New Brubeck Quartet Live at Montreux 77

This is the 3rd in his '2 generations' series, Dave Brubeck has always been one of my biggest jazz piano influences and when i heard his albums done with his kids (Two Generations of Brubeck) and
(Brother, The Great Spirit Made Us All) i got giddy with excitement...much like Dave probably did as a proud parent jamming with his very able bodied kids playing bass, drums and electric piano's!

Since 2004 they finally got around to releasing the first 2, but for some reason never released this gem of an album onto CD. So I've spent the last month tracking down a good LP copy, only to have to send it to Mama C up in Maine to have it transferred to CD and me to put it here for any jazz lovers pleasure. Hope ya'll enjoy it as much as me!!!!!

For a period in 1977-78 (after the death of altoist Paul Desmond), pianist Dave Brubeck had a quartet with his sons keyboardist Darius, drummer Dan and Chris on bass and trombone. This Montreux concert features five of Dave Brubeck's originals (including "It's a Raggy Waltz" and "In Your Own Sweet Way") along with the standard "It Could Happen to You" and finds father Dave in fine form even if Desmond is clearly missed. A multi-instrumentalist and fantastic singer/songwriter, I have much respect for him. This tour introduces Rick Grech on bass, allowing Stevie more room for singing and playing keyboards while Chris Wood wails on the sax and flute and Jim Capaldi jammin it up on drums..

american idol is the piss poor pot of a cesspool
collecting under the homes and tvs of a new and
stupid counter culture that is the degradation
of not only our musical heritage and culture,
but also musicians everywhere.

America, a country once known for innovative
and creative musical culture, creating blues, jazz, rock n roll,
bluegrass, hip hop, etc etc.
has now degraded down to watching dumb numb nuts
on tv.

instead of going to see real musicians play their
craft, americans prefer to dump their cultural expectations
and knowledge onto some corporate reality tv
experts...who in fact took the fun of chineese karaoke
and glamorized it and idealized in attemp to idolize for all the
talentless hacks praying for their 1-15 minutes of fame.
the winners? have a season and perhaps a one year of fame!!
it is my opinion that these reality tv corporate executives should
be strung up by their balls, and put on a spit and roasted by
the fires of hell started from the money they extract from the public and networks
that support them, they should be glazed from the drippings of
drool extracted by all the envious participants and stuffed with the mush for brains of the people that all participate in this degradation and embarassment of
the music business, and fed to any people who share in the happiness that comes from this diseased business.
ive watched this unwanted fungus growing on the tourist coasts of the eastern united states and im sure its creeping, unnoticed throughout america and i fear for our culture. soon our culture will be defined by its lack of culture.

shame on you american idol idiots.
real music and musicians are taking monetary losses,
concert sales are down, musicians are starving in the streets
because you would rather sing and watch karaoke,
while a computer plays the musical instruments.
because you are too dumb/lame/uncultured to appreciate and support
people who spend their lives on the appreciation and performance of
get a life, and perhaps borrow the 2 cents that is so badly needed in this country.
